This phenomenon is what marketers refer to as the “lipstick Index.” High-end product and service companies can take advantage of this affordable-luxury-seeking trend in several ways. For example, some designer label fashion names, like Chanel, Versace and Christian Louboutin are reportedly discounting between 8% and 10% off most products to attract shoppers in the US.

In Toronto, Birks & Mayors ran an atypical holiday BOGO sale (buy one get one — usually either for free or half price). These types of value-added promotions that cater to customers seeking quality for the best price yield their best results during economic downturns, when purse strings are tight. Although cutting prices is a double-edged sword, and many warn against it, finding ways to deliver value-added promotions can help you keep your head above water.

Products that attach themselves to a “smart buy” philosophy resonate with consumers, such as a luxury car brand that promotes better gas mileage through superior engineering. Or affordability, as in the case of BMW Canada’s advertising launch of diesel. High-end hotels have offered value-added programs such as giving guests “bonus nights,” or chopping 20% off weekends, as more than 2,500 Marriott International hotels did last September. Enhancing loyalty programs is another effective strategy, with points programs and membership privilege cards.
